Feed Hunting settings for Triple Dragon satellite receivers

Post by womble »

Feed Hunting settings for Triple Dragon satellite receivers
===========================================================

Use as YOUR OWN RISK!

Please READ the entire document before using these settings.

--

This will add feed satellites to the receiver.
Which have the commonly known feed transponders to the Auto Scan list.

Each feed satellite is marked 0.1 degrees from the normal position.
For instance 7E will be 7.1E and 12.5W will be 12.6W

Satellites included
5e, 7e, 10e, 16e, 23.5e, 33e, 36e
1w, 5w, 8w, 11w, 12.5w, 15w

Satellites NOT included (my dish does not receive these)
18w, 22w, 24.5w, 27.5w, 30w

It will not disrupt your already present satellites.

Instructions
============

Backup your current settings!

At least the following files, if not the whole directory.
/var/share/dvb2001/favourites.txt
/var/share/dvb2001/sat-inputs.dat
/var/share/dvb2001/services.dat

There is a plugin to save your settings but I have not tested this yet.

Upload the user-tp.dat file into /var/share/dvb2001/ on your Triple Dragon receiver.

Now restart your receiver.

You need to attach the feed satellite/s to your rotor or some form of connection otherwise they will not become available to scan.

Menu > Installation > Satellite Setup

Image

Find each feed satellite you require and then attach it to your rotor or LNB.

Image

Now to do some feed hunting.

Menu > Installation > Auto Scan

Image

Pick the satellite/s you want to scan ie, 7.1E - W3A Feeds then sit and wait :)

Image

Once the scan is complete you can find a list of active feeds to scan through in your normal Satellites channel menu.

It is slow to search but better than nothing.

Instructions - Updating from previous settings
==============================================

Some satellites have been removed from the previous settings, 2007-01-26 @ 16:47
This *may* cause some problems when updating, jumbled up channels etc.
Removed feed satellites are 30.5e, 26e, 21.5e, 4w.
You have a few options (neither tested by me)
- rescan your entire orbit and this should clear up any errant channels
- use channel editing software to remove the satellites in your current settings before updating

As always backup your current settings, just in case.

Upload the user-tp.dat file into /var/share/dvb2001/ on your Triple Dragon receiver.

You can start scanning at your leisure, no need to restart.

For the first few scans your receiver will check your already found feeds, so you may get a few duplicate feed listings.

Approximate Search Times
========================

36E 4 mins
23.5E 3 mins
16E 4 mins
10E 4 mins
7E 4 mins
1W 2 mins
4W 2 mins
5W 2 mins
8W 1 mins
12.5W 5 mins

Warning
=======

Every time you scan a satellite (and leave the menu system) it gets written to the Flash chip.
Heavy usage could prematurely end the life of your Flash chip.

So you have been warned.

Removal
=======

Should be as simple as removing user-tp.dat from /var/share/dvb2001/ and then restarting.

However this is not tested!

You may have to restore your original settings as well as removing the user-tp.dat.
Of course you remembered to backup your original settings like you were told.

Notes and Improvements
======================

The settings are not perfect by any means.

During the last few weeks of December 2006 the original settings were used to extensively scan all the satellites.
From this data together with a few days from the middle of January 2007, completely new settings were generated.

This has greatly reduced the amount of transponders and also removed nearly all the duplicate transponders.
Thus improving the speed of the scans :)

Downside of this is that a few of the satellites had their transponders reduced to zero or just a handful.

30.5e, 26e, 21.5e and 4w have now been removed from the original settings.
Since I have not been able to find a single active feed on them.

36e, 33e, 23.5e, 5w and 8w have just a handful of known active feed frequencies left.

15w has been added since I now get a signal from this satellite but it is not fully tested yet.

The current settings have been generated from scan data since December 2006 until the start of June 2007.

Encrypted Feeds
===============

Sadly lots of feeds are now encrypted.

If it does not show up as encrypted then you can normally tell by the fact you cannot see or hear anything.

Another way to check is by looking to see if the audio is scrambled, this generally means the whole feed is encrypted.

You win some and you lose some.

Better to watch the FTA feeds :)

MPEG 4:2:2
==========

If the picture shows as blank on the screen but you can hear audio then maybe the feed is in 4:2:2 format.

You can use the Triple Dragon to watch 4:2:2 feeds on your PC using the HTTP Streaming Server plugin and VideoLAN.
Personally for me it does not work very well, the receiver starts behaving like a wounded dog.

Better to record onto the hard drive in .ts format then transfer to your PC and watch afterwards.

In general 4:2:2 feeds are a much higher bitrate and quality so will take up lots more space than normal recordings.
For instance one feed lasting 36 minutes took up 2.10Gb of space.

VideoLAN software will handle 4:2:2 without a problem and is free :)

If you want to edit the 4:2:2 .ts files then I recommend VideoReDo software for Windows.
